Letters to the Editor: Mission of Mercy makes huge impact in region
By Jeffry Levesque
Charles Town, WV- During the Mission of Mercy dental clinic, I was privileged to witness the kind of extraordinary teamwork that exemplifies this wonderful program.
A 39-year-old man received numbing medication, and the oral surgeon and hygienist were prepared to extract several seriously decayed teeth. The man began shaking all over. The oral surgeon could not work safely on the patient. Medical consultation was requested.
Dr. Rosemary Cannerella spoke to the patient and oral surgeon, and determined that the shaking was not a reaction to medication, but rather it was a nervous reaction. She asked the man to squeeze her hand. When he did, his body stopped shaking.
Dr. Cannerella remained at the patient's side, encouraging him to squeeze her hand. She spoke calmly and reassuringly to him throughout the difficult tooth extractions.
This is but one example of the high level of compassionate and competent care provided at this well-organized event. Thank you, United Way of the Eastern Panhandle, for making this possible.
