LITERACY VOLUNTEERS OPEN HOUSE Congress has declared the week of September 13-17 as "National Adult Education and Family Literacy Week". Literacy Volunteers of the Eastern Panhandle is reaching out to the communities of the Panhandle to become acquainted with its programs by holding an house on Tuesday, Sept 14, 6:30-8PM at the Martinsburg Library. FINANCIAL LITERACY TRAIN THE TRAINER The Raleigh, North Carolina Field Office of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) and Eastern Panhandle EITC Coalition will host Instruction for financial literacy education. What: This is a free seminar designed to present the basics of classroom instruction; to enable and empower volunteers to deliver approximately one-hour long courses on the FDIC’s Money Smart curriculum to end-users. The primary purpose is to provide the class participant with tools that may enhance their skills as a classroom instructor in teaching the Money Smart modules. The seminar will also cover some ideas and recommendations on how to present the Money Smart curriculum. When: October 8, 2010 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Who: Limited to the first 32 enrollees (a box lunch will be provided). Please arrive on time.

The program is free for individuals in Berkeley, Grant, Hampshire, Hardy, Jefferson, Mineral, Morgan, or Pendleton counties who meet low income guidelines (200% of the poverty level) and have not been weatherized after September 30, 1993. Elderly people and people with disabilities are prioritized. Waiting periods vary. Eastern WV Community Action Agency is a community based non-profit organization dedicated to alleviating the causes and conditions of poverty. To this end, EWVCAA offers a variety of services tailored to the needs of lower income households, including emergency assistance, energy-efficient weatherization, housing loan origination, budget counseling, nutrition programs, and referrals to supporting agencies and organizations. New WVCHIP Enrollment Numbers New West Virginia Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) numbers are in. As of November 30, 2009, there were 24,915 children enrolled in CHIP (an increase of 25 children over October) and 159,572 children enrolled in Medicaid (an increase of 992 children over October). State Asset Coalition Meeting A meeting to address the development of a State Asset Coalition for lower income families was held in May at Berkeley County DHHR. At that meeting, representatives of local organizations asked for additional information from the West Virginia Alliance for Sustainable Families, which is coordinating the Asset Coalition effort. WV has the largest increase in the US for death due to drug overdose: 550%. Prescription drug abuse often begins with routine and necessary treatment for pain due to injury or medical condition, but spirals out of control to devastating personal damage and loss--or fatality.
Self Help Housing Telamon is currently looking for five families that would like to build their own homes. Five lots are available in Inwood. The Self-Help Program is for families under 80% of the median income limits. The families work together and supply up to 65% of the labor to build their homes. They do not need construction experience. They do have to qualify for a USDA/Rural Housing loan. No down payment is required and the monthly payment is based on the person’s income.
